His current orphanage diet is very very bland. And he is not to have sweets, based on the doctors that we spoke to. The poor guy has some eczema issues, and the sweets bring it out.... so no sweet goodies or junk. As a matter of fact, I kind of want to keep his diet bland until we get back to the States and our pediatrician and I can slowly monitor the foods we introduce and his reaction to them. (Skin allergy wise).
Then I thought, this guy is so small for his age.....he's just over 2 years. Maybe I should give him some formula too??? It certainly would give him the nutrients he needs even once a day. Plus the bottle feeding once a day might help with bonding. (though he likes to be very independent) He usually has some type of mashed meat with rice and soup for dinner and lunch. (no soup at dinner only lunch), and cabbage or cucumbers. SO, I have no clue what I might do. I'm thinking:
- cheerios or puffed rice (hardly any sugar in those),
- yogurt (he has that for breakfast sometimes.
- Cream of wheat
- baby cereal.
- rice with chicken
- rice with noodles
- banana mashed a bit
- Gerber graduates?
- biscuit type cookie (he had this as a snack when we visited the orphanage)
I also realized today as I was going through my clothing list that I have no socks for him. Um.... funny, but it's 28 degrees as a high in Russia... I think he's gonna need some socks! lol! It's the little things I'm forgetting!
Hopefully tomorrow I can pull the rest of it together... It's hard to figure out so much of this beforehand. I know we'll have lots of time to bond and figure out his likes and dislikes. But I like to be prepared with ideas and options while we are out of the country! Once we are home, I have the luxury of a car and shops close by to get whatever we need. So, if anyone has ideas for me on things to feed this little guy while we are in Russia, please let me know!

I wish I had ideas on the food. Our daughter was almost 4, so we were feeding her foods that we were eating. I think the formula and bottle feeding is a great idea. The extra nutrients couldn't hurt. I think the Cream of Wheat and Oatmeal would be good items to bring too since they are small and pack well.
Bringing a baby home would require even us to do some baby proofing. I forget how much you have to do to plan for their arrival. I had a friend visit with her 15 month old daughter last week at work. I didn't realize how un-kid friendly my office was until she stopped by.
Have fun shopping!! I cannot wait for your return and to see photos.
Daniel was just under two when we picked him up and we actually fed him some baby food because the orphanage was at the time. Yogurt is great and cottage cheese as they also eat a form of it. Also the single grain baby oatmeal would be more filling than the cereal and we always mixed yogurt into that. Otherwise we fed him table food like scrambled eggs and soft foods. The Gerber Graduates were a huge hit (the ones in the round containers) once we got home. Daniel wouldn't have anything to do with a sippy cup and we never tried the bottle. Of course once we got home he learned the sippy cup, but at first I had to take out the plug thing so the juice would just run. Now he's good to go. Hope that helps!
Congratulations on successful court!
I would second the suggestion of Gerber Graduates. They are rather bland tasting (yes, I've tasted them), and convenient too!
Congratulations! I agree with Carey on the food - yogurt is good too. Our kids loved yogurt and still eat it to this day.
Y'all are braver than I am to make that flight twice in such a short turnaround. I had to get happy pills from the doctor for the flight!
God Bless -
I third the Gerber Graduates. Luisa really LOVED the pasta bites too and to me, they had no taste at all!
We can't wait to meet him! This seems like such a long time coming. We want to buy him his first Cincinnati Reds baseball hat! (mind you I only say Reds because they pay our bills!)
Good luck with the shopping!
Congratulations on your successful court trip! My son was 26 months old when I brought him home last year. I too was worried about what I was going to feed him while in Russia (we were there 28 days 6 with new son, can you say long)!
So here is what I brought with me on the trip; baby cereal - mixed with yogurt - warm milk or warm water, cheerios, Gerber graduates, lots of fruit cups (he loved fruit), baby food (very easy and he loved this too). We stayed in a hotel but had a small refrigerator so I bought cheese, milk, yogurt, bread which I either put jelly or peanut butter on (brought the PB with us), and bananas.
I’m not sure this helps but that’s what I remember! Good luck on the next "leg" of your journey!
Maybe when you return home you can give him pediasure. It has all the nutrition a little guy needs. GOOD LUCK AND GOD BLESS!!!!!
